LIBRO
Memoirs of Piazza (1889-1946), a lawyer and journalist, born in Trieste, relating his experiences during his ten-month internment in Auschwitz. He was arrested while trying to flee to Switzerland, interned in Risiera di San Sabba, and deported in July 1944. Having been deported as a political prisoner, and being half-Jewish, he was assigned a "high number" in Auschwitz which protected him from the selections. Describes life and suffering in the camp, including the place of the "kapos". During the Nazi evacuation of the camp, Piazza was in the camp infirmary; he was liberated there by the Soviet Army. He returned to Italy, and immediately wrote his memoirs. He died in 1946, due to health complications.
