Discusses the stance of the Vatican toward the Nazi regime. Pt. 3, ch. 1 (pp. 187-208), "Il 'Silencio' di Pio XII e l'Olocausto", focuses on Pius XII's attitude toward Nazi persecution of the Jews. States that he was convinced of the futility of public condemnation and confrontation with Hitler's regime, which he thought would have provoked brutal retaliation against Catholics and the Church in Germany and in Nazi-occupied countries. Affirms that Pius XII helped Jews where and when it was possible, using channels of Vatican diplomacy or personal intervention, especially in the face of persecution of converted Jews and those in mixed marriages, and on the eve of mass deportations. Pp. 273-531 contain 136 documents from the secret Vatican Archive, related to the Nunciature of Berlin from 1922-39, on which the present research is based.
