LIBRO
A history of the political and economic elites of Trieste from the abolition of the "porto franco" status (1891) to the racial laws of 1938. Behind the economic integration of the various minorities in the town with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the middle and upper classes were split along national lines between revisionist Italians and nationalist Slovenes. On pp. 55-68, "L'ebraismo tra assimilazione e lotta nazionale, " states that after emancipation most Jews assimilated with the economic elites, and were predominantly pro-Italian. Anti-Italian manifestations at the time of Karl Lueger's visit to Trieste in 1898 degenerated into an anti-Jewish campaign. Pp. 331-347, "La tragedia dell'ebraismo triestino, " show the measure of the Jews' integration in the Italian state after World War I, many of whom supported fascism. The racial laws of 1938 caused a severe crisis among the Jews of Trieste, who were expelled from their positions under accusations of economic domination of local trade.
