Targets in Translation is an indispensable study aid for students at an advanced level of English preparing for the 3rd year English language examination which forms part of the Italian University Corso di Laurea in Lingue e Letteratura Inglese (Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia). In addition, students working at an equivalent level in Language Schools will find this book particularly relevant to their requirements. It also lends itself as a useful resource book for those wishing to carry out further research or work in this area, both academically and professionally. Being specifically exam-orientated, it takes a practical view of the rationale that lies behind the translation process. Each of the 20 self-ccontained study units focuses on the translation into English of an authentic passage taken from a 20th-century Italian prose writer. The annotations in the text direct the reader's attention to the various problems of lexis, syntax, semantics and stylistics that invariably come into play in the L1 to L2 transfer. By means of detailed explanations and exemplification, he/she is given guidance in the thinking process underlying the ultimate choices to be made in the decoding-encoding exercise. Thus it affords ample opportunity for the student to consolidate the fundamentals, tackle the notorious areas of difficulty and face the examination with a reasonable amount of confidence and competence. The inclusion of "model" English versions in the Appendix makes the book suitable not only for use in the classroom, where the material can be exploited for interpretation, analysis and discussion, but also for students working independently without tuition.
